Mind the Geese

Comments

We have a similar situation, where mama and daddy geese have chosen to nest right next to one of the busiest highways in town. I don't get it, since there's a marsh with a lot of high green knolls right next the road, but someone mentioned that the exploding population of raccoons has made it hard for the geese to find a safe place to nest. I guess most raccoons avoid the highway since I notice so many there end up as roadkill.

But yes, keep us updated. I hate to think that she or the babies might get run over.

Wow, she really is right there next to the cars! Brave gal!

Well, WTF? I come back after the weekend and there's no Mother Goose--just one intact egg and one broken one.

It's possible the one egg hatched and the other was infertile, and Mama took off with Baby. According to this page, the hatching happens fast, so maybe they can tell when it's been too long and an egg ain't gonna hatch.

I don't particularly suspect human malfeasance--not much traffic around there on a weekend. There are a few coyotes around, but I didn't see signs of animal malfeasance, either.

Like I said, WTF.
